5 Best Coffee Shops in Lake Placid, NY (A Local's Honest Guide)
I grew up in the Adirondacks, and Lake Placid was essentially my backyard for the first 20 years of my life. I'm also deeply, unapologetically obsessed with coffee. This guide is the result of both of those things - here's my honest guide to where to actually go while visiting the Lake Placid area!
For a small village tucked into the Adirondack Mountains, Lake Placid has absolutely no business having this good of a coffee scene. And yet, especially in the last few years, the quality of what's available here has become something I look forward to almost as much as the hiking. Whether you're fueling up before a day on the trails, warming up after a morning on the slopes, or just looking for somewhere cozy to sit with a great latte, this guide has you covered.
One thing I want to be upfront about: not all coffee shops are created equal, and I'm going to be honest about which ones are worth going out of your way for versus which ones are better visited for the views or the vibe rather than the coffee itself. You deserve to know before you spend $6 on a latte!

1. Capisce Coffee & Espresso Bar
Address: 5659 Cascade Road, Lake Placid, NY 12946
Best for: The most inventive coffee menu in the area + Italian-inspired food
Website: capiscecoffee.com
Capisce Coffee is the coffee shop that Lake Placid needed. I've lost count of how many times I've been since they opened - and everything I've ever ordered has been 10/10, without fail. The quality is consistently great, the atmosphere is warm and beautifully designed, and the menu is genuinely creative in a way that most small-town coffee shops simply aren't.
I'm a sucker for going classic here - an iced latte or a cappuccino is always my order and it never disappoints. But Capisce always has a rotating menu of inventive specials that are absolutely worth trying, especially the seasonal fall drinks which are some of my favorites anywhere. And the menu item I'm most excited to try on my next visit: their latte flight, which allows you to order three mini versions of your pick of lattes from the current menu. Yes please! That’s my kind of coffee order.
Beyond the coffee, Capisce adds an Italian flair to everything - Sicilian sodas, Italian sandwiches, beautifully made baked goods. Also, the outdoor seating area is super lovely on a nice day.
One thing to note: Capisce is just outside of downtown Lake Placid on Cascade Road, so you'll likely want to drive. Technically it’s completely walkable, but it’s a decent stroll (2 miles one way) from proper downtown.
My honest take: My personal #1 in Lake Placid. If you only have time for one coffee stop, make it this one!

2. Origin Coffee Co.
Address: 2669 Main St, Lake Placid, NY 12946
Best for: Best downtown coffee + serious espresso quality
Website: origincoffeeadk.com
Origin Coffee is the go-to for serious coffee drinkers in downtown Lake Placid, and has been for a while. They roast their beans weekly, use a chef-driven food menu with local and organic ingredients, and consistently produce some of the best espresso in the Adirondacks.
My order is always a classic iced latte, which is always fantastic here, but Origin also does rotating seasonal specials that are worth trying. Their fall menu in particular is lovely, with flavors that lean into the season in a way that feels intentional rather than gimmicky - i.e. maple cold foam on iced beverages, which is always a heck yes for me.
Origin also has a second location in Saranac Lake - definitely worth noting if you're extending your Adirondacks trip beyond Lake Placid.
My honest take: The best downtown option! Go here if you want exceptional espresso and don't mind a possible wait since it’s within walking distance of everything right downtown.
3. The Coffee Bar
Address: 2527 Main Street, Lake Placid, NY 12946
Best for: Unbeatable Mirror Lake views with your coffee
Website: adkcoffeebar.com
I'll be totally candid with with you: The Coffee Bar is the spot I have the least experience with. The espresso is very good - just not quite at the level of Capisce or Origin, so I usually gravitate towards those two first. But what this place has that nowhere else in Lake Placid can match is the location and the views.
It sits right on Main Street with a back deck overlooking Mirror Lake and Whiteface Mountain - and if you can snag one of those lake-facing seats, you've absolutely hit the jackpot. Sitting there with a latte and that view in front of you? Perfect way to relax after a morning of hiking or whatever adventures you’ve been up to.
They use single-origin beans from Tug Hill Artisan Roasters and keep the menu focused - coffee, a handful of breakfast items, bagels, a few lunch options. Nothing too complicated, all done well.
My honest take: Come primarily for the views, if you can get a seat on their back deck, and let the coffee be the bonus.
4. The Breakfast Club, Etc.
Address: 2431 Main St, Lake Placid, NY 12946
Best for: Delicious brunch in Lake Placid + coffee as the perfect complement
Website: thebcetc.com
The Breakfast Club is my absolute favorite brunch spot in Lake Placid - which is saying something. My go-to order is their röstis: crispy potatoes and eggs cooked in a cast iron skillet, with bacon and Swiss cheese. It arrives at the table bubbling and golden and is exactly what you want after a morning hike. I always pair it with a flat white, which is consistently well-made here.
The honest coffee context: The Breakfast Club is on this list because the coffee is genuinely good and the overall experience is wonderful - but if coffee is the star of the show rather than a supporting role, head to Capisce or Origin instead. This spot shines brightest when you want a proper, hearty breakfast with great coffee alongside it rather than the other way around.
They also have gorgeous Mirror Lake views from the dining room, making it a lovely setting for a long, lazy morning.
My honest take: The best spot on this list for a full breakfast experience. Prioritize it for brunch, not for a quick coffee stop.
5. The Frenchman's Bakery (Keene Valley)
Address: 1888 NY-73, Keene Valley, NY 12943
Best for: The best coffee stop (and baked goods) before or after hiking the High Peaks
Website: frenchmansbakery.com
Yes, I know I know I know…this is not in Lake Placid. But hear me out first.
A note on this one first: Old Mountain Coffee in Keene Valley used to be the undisputed go-to caffeine stop for High Peaks hikers - my personal favorite post-hike ritual for years. It permanently closed in October 2024, which was devastating news for anyone who loved it (I’m still heartbroken over this).
Now, the Frenchman's Bakery has since stepped up as the quality alternative in Keene Valley, and happily, it's a really lovely spot!
It's primarily a French bakery - the breads, croissants, pastries, and sandwiches are the stars here, beautifully made and worth the stop on their own. Coffee is complementary to that main focus rather than the headline, but they do it well: espresso-based drinks (my go-to order is a cappuccino), cold brew, and drip coffee. Nothing overcomplicated. Grab a croissant, a pain au chocolat, or a baguette to bring home with your takeaway coffee! Or of course, you can sit in - they have some nice little tables outside as well.
The location on Route 73 makes it an easy stop on the way to or from the trailheads in the High Peaks area.
My honest take: Not a destination coffee shop in the way Capisce or Origin are - but a genuinely lovely, quality stop if you're in the Keene Valley area. The baked goods alone make it worth pulling over.

Final Thoughts
Honestly, the fact that I can return to my home area and pop into a coffee shop like Capisce - one that I'd genuinely rave about anywhere in the world - makes me really unreasonably happy. The Lake Placid coffee scene has come a long way, and it just keeps getting better.
My shortcut for anyone who doesn't want to read the whole thing: go to Capisce first, Origin second. Everything else on this list is simply a bonus worth knowing about, depending on what kind of day you're having or where you find yourself while in Lake Placid!
