Quick Guide to Seward

Before we dive into where to stay, here's what you need to know: Seward sits at the head of Resurrection Bay on the Kenai Peninsula, about 125 miles south of Anchorage. This charming port town is your gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park and serves up an incredible mix of outdoor adventure, wildlife encounters, and small-town Alaska vibes (the best kind of vibes, if you ask me!).

The town itself is quite walkable, with most restaurants, shops, and tour operators clustered around the harbor. Just a few minutes outside downtown (via car), you'll find Lowell Point, a quieter waterfront area that's become a favorite for those seeking a more secluded stay while still being close to everything Seward has to offer.

15. Bear Glacier Yurt via Helicopter

Want to go all out? This all-inclusive splurge is worth every penny for the experience of sleeping in the Alaskan wilderness - but in style.

You'll helicopter over towards Bear Glacier, where you'll stay overnight in a comfortable yurt surrounded by massive icebergs and stunning glacier views. The 25-minute helicopter ride alone is incredible, soaring above Seward's rugged coastline and mountain peaks.

Your stay includes all meals featuring seasonal local Alaskan fare, from wild-caught seafood to fresh produce. The yurts have queen beds and heaters, and there's a "beautiful outhouse" right on site (never thought I would say "beautiful" and "outhouse" in the same sentence, but here we are). A staff member is on site to help with your every need, and guided kayaking is included.

The departure time varies between 4-6 PM, and you'll return the following day between 4-6 PM - based on a one night stay, which ends up being a full 24 hour backcountry adventure. At $1,200 per person (2 person minimum), it's a high-ticket stay, but this is the kind of once-in-a-lifetime adventure that fully captures the magic and beauty of Alaska.

FAQ

Q: How far is Seward from Anchorage?

A: Seward is about 125 miles (2.5 hours) south of Anchorage via the Seward Highway. Budget extra time for photo stops, you'll definitely want them! This is one of the most beautiful drives in the state.

Q: Do I need a car in Seward?

A: Short answer: it depends. Mainly on where you're coming from, where you're staying and where you plan to explore. If you're staying in downtown Seward, you can walk to most restaurants, shops, and organized tour departure points. In that case, no car is needed! However, having a car gives you flexibility to explore Lowell Point, Exit Glacier, and other nearby outdoorsy areas at your own pace. I always recommend searching for the best rental car rates on RentalCars.com.

Q: When is the best time to book accommodations in Seward?

A: Summer (June-August) is peak season, so book as early as possible. The most desirable accommodations can fill up very quickly. Shoulder season (May and September) gives you more flexibility with availability and typically, better rates. With these shoulder season months, you don't need to book quite as far in advance.

Q: Are there budget-friendly options in Seward?

A: Miller's Landing has very affordable camping options, and booking during shoulder season can save you a lot of money on hotels and cabins. Keep in mind that Seward is a very popular tourist destination in the summer months, so prices reflect that demand.

Q: Can I find pet-friendly accommodations?

A: Happily, yes you can! Though I will admit, the options are not super plentiful. Some cabins and campgrounds welcome pets, like the Beach House and Miller's Landing. Always check the specific property's pet policy and any additional fees before booking.

Final Thoughts

For such a small town, Seward has a surprising number of accommodation options that cater to all travel styles. And while the "best places to stay in Seward" is subjective, this curated guide holds some of the most highly rated and most loved accommodations in the area.

My advice? Don't just pick based on price or location alone. Think about what kind of Alaska experience you're after. Want to be in the heart of the action? Stay downtown. Craving peace and incredible views? Head to Lowell Point. Ready for true Alaskan adventure? Go for one of the "unique" options. Happy travels!
