The Connection Between J.K. Rowling, Edinburgh, and Harry Potter

J.K. Rowling (the brilliant mind behind Harry Potter - although I’m not sure I need to specify that 😂) moved to Edinburgh in the early 1990s. This amazing city inspired her and served as the perfect environment to create a magical wizarding world. She often wrote in local cafes, soaking up inspiration from the city's architecture, history and vibrant culture. Edinburgh’s unique charm and mystical vibe were key in shaping the world of Harry Potter we know and love!

Was Harry Potter filmed in Edinburgh?

No, surprisingly not at all! It was filmed in sporadic other locations throughout the Scottish Highlands though, in addition to various locations in England. Edinburgh is the “birthplace” of Harry Potter solely because the books were written there, and the city served as inspiration for Rowling’s writings.

Edinburgh Harry Potter Locations & Activities

1. The Elephant House

Source: Facebook

Dubbed the "birthplace" of Harry Potter, The Elephant House cafe is where J.K. Rowling wrote significant portions of the early Harry Potter books. Unfortunately the original location of The Elephant House burnt down in 2021, but prior to that, it was easy to see why this cafe became a favorite spot for Rowling. Its cozy ambiance and stunning views of Edinburgh Castle would’ve made for the perfect writing location.

You can still visit the exterior of the old cafe site for a quick photo-op, before popping around the corner to visit their newly opened cafe site on Victoria Street.

Original location (where the books were written): 21 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh
New location (as of 2024): 30 Victoria St, Edinburgh

2. Greyfriars Kirkyard

Tom Riddell’s grave, said to be the name inspiration for Tom Riddle / Lord Voldemort

A stroll through Greyfriars Kirkyard reveals more than just an old cemetery. Here, you’ll find the grave of Tom Riddle, the very name that inspired Voldemort's alias. The eerie yet captivating atmosphere of the kirkyard served as a muse for some of Rowling’s darker scenes. Keep your eyes peeled for other familiar names, as several of the gravestones influenced other character names in the series.

3. Victoria Street

Victoria Street, with its colorful facades and winding layout, is believed to be the inspiration behind Diagon Alley. This bustling street is lined with charming shops and cafes, much like the magical alley where wizards purchase their Hogwarts supplies. Wandering through Victoria Street, you can almost hear the chatter of witches and wizards (or maybe we’re just using some imagination here!), making it a must-visit for any Harry Potter fan.

>> Pro Tip: Stay near Victoria Street / the Grassmarket area during your trip to be within walking distance of everything that Old Town Edinburgh has to offer! A few of my top recommendations for hotels in this area:

The Grassmarket Hotel (mid-range)
Virgin Hotels Edinburgh (luxury)
Castle Rock Hostel (budget)

4. George Heriot’s School

Source: Facebook

George Heriot’s School, with its beautiful gothic architecture, is often thought to be the inspiration behind Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The school’s four towers are reminiscent of the four houses of Hogwarts, and its prestigious reputation aligns perfectly with the magical school’s elite status. While you can’t enter the school grounds, admiring its architecture from the outside is still possible - you can get a great view from Greyfriars Kirkyard or Edinburgh Castle's Esplanade.

5. Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle

“Hogwarts”

Edinburgh Castle, perched atop Castle Rock, offers breathtaking views and a glimpse into Scotland's rich history. It’s far too easy to draw parallels between this majestic castle and Hogwarts. I mean…just look at the similarities! Uncanny.

6. New College at The University of Edinburgh

The Gothic architecture of the School of Divinity (housed in the New College) at The University of Edinburgh may remind visitors of the halls of Hogwarts. The intricate design and castle-like vibes makes it another spot where you can feel the connection between Edinburgh and the world of Harry Potter.

7. The Balmoral Hotel

The Balmoral Hotel isn't just any luxury stay; it’s a historic gem in the heart of Edinburgh with a rich legacy. Fun fact: it's where J.K. Rowling wrapped up "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," the last book of the series! Suite 552, now called the "J.K. Rowling Suite," is where she finished the book. This suite is packed with unique memorabilia, and there's even a marble bust of Hermes signed by Rowling. The hotel offers 5 star accommodations, delicious dining and stunning city views, making it a must-visit for fans and travelers alike.

8. Museum Context

For those looking to bring a piece of the magic home, the Museum Context shop offers a wide array of Harry Potter-themed merchandise tucked into a charming and historic three-story building. Located on Victoria Street, this shop will truly transport you straight into the world of wizardry - offering everything from wands to house scarves.

9. J.K. Rowling’s Handprints at the City Chambers

Back in 2008, J.K. Rowling received the "Edinburgh Award," and her handprints were forever preserved in the City Chambers’ courtyard. If you drop by, you can celebrate the amazing impact Rowling has had on both literature and the city of Edinburgh.

10. Potterrow Port and Potterrow Street

While not directly linked to the books, the names Potterrow Port and Potterrow Street seem almost too coincidental. It’s rumored that these locations inspired the famed last name. We’ll likely never know for sure!

Potterrow Port also resembles the movie location where Dudley and Harry come across Dementors in the Order of Phoenix, adding another layer of connection between Edinburgh and Harry Potter’s world. Full disclosure: This is a very quick stop to make between other (more scenic) spots.

11. Harry Potter-Inspired Cocktail Bars + Afternoon Tea

For a magical night out, visit The Department of Magic bar or The Cauldron Co bar. These themed bars offer immersive experiences with potions classes and magical cocktails, allowing you to live out a real life wizarding world night on the town.

From the Department of Magic’s website: “Looking for an Edinburgh cocktail bar with a difference? Experience something truly unique by stepping into our Magic Potions Tavern - a secret, themed bar in the city centre! Home to a selection of enchanting, cocktail-making experiences, and #1 rated on the 'pubs & clubs' section of Tripadvisor in Edinburgh.”

From The Cauldron Co.’s website: “An immersive cocktail class in Edinburgh where you don a cloak, wield a working magic wand & use molecular mixology to brew drinkable elixirs. What's Included: A welcome drink poured with your magic wand, two molecular cocktails or mocktails that you brew, a 1hr 45min interactive experience.”

Not into cocktails? The Cauldron Co. also offers a magically-inspired Harry Potter afternoon tea - complete with the same interactive wizarding experience as the potion cocktail class!

Two Must-Visit Harry Potter Locations Outside of Edinburgh

1. The “Hogwarts Express” at the Glenfinnan Viaduct

While in Scotland, a trip to the Glenfinnan Viaduct to see the Jacobite Steam Train, famously known as the “Hogwarts Express,” is a must. This scenic train ride offers stunning views and a chance to relive the iconic journeys to Hogwarts, making it a memorable addition to your Harry Potter adventure.

You can either:

Book a ticket to ride on the train, which runs daily between Fort William and Mallaig.

Or, opt to view the train crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct for an iconic photo-op.

Make sure to check the timetables in advance to see exactly when the train will be crossing over the viaduct, and arrive early to allow for plenty of time to walk up to the viewpoint!

2. Alnwick Castle

Just a short drive from Edinburgh (under 2 hours), Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, England, is a must-visit for Harry Potter fans. This stunning medieval castle was the main set for many of the Hogwarts exterior scenes in the first two films. As you stroll through its courtyards, you can almost see Harry's first Quidditch lesson and the students learning to fly broomsticks.

The castle even hosts themed events and activities, letting fans dive into the wizarding world. Visiting Alnwick Castle feels like stepping right into J.K. Rowling's books, making it a magical stop on your Harry Potter journey, even if that means a quick jaunt over to northern England!
