There’s truly nothing quite like wandering through a European Christmas market, a warm mug of glühwein in hand, surrounded by twinkling lights and the scent of sweet holiday desserts permeating the air. The dream.

Planning a trip to the magical Christmas markets in Europe this winter? The key to fully enjoying the experience is staying warm and comfortable. Winter weather can very quickly turn the festive mood into a struggle bus if you're not dressed accordingly.

The very first Christmas market I ever visited was in Edinburgh, Scotland about 10 years ago, and when I tell you I was unprepared…Oooof. White Converse sneakers in that cold and moody winter weather? Bad call.

Not sure what to pack? No stress, I’ve got you covered! This guide has everything you need to know about what to wear - from the coziest clothing layers to practical (and essential) accessories. Plus, I’ve also included a few curated Christmas market outfits to inspire your packing list. Let's dive in!

Ultimate Christmas Market Packing Checklist

Here is a quick checklist of everything you'll need for your European winter adventure!

Quick tip: When it comes to Christmas market outfits, think comfy and cozy as your top priority, and cute as the second. The goal is to layer up in a way that keeps you toasty for hours of outdoor exploring. Your favorite suede jacket might look gorgeous in photos, but if it's not warm and weather-resistant enough for potential snowfall, it should be sidelined for this trip!

  • Coats: 1-2 warm coats (one insulated puffy, one wool), 1 rain jacket

  • Layers: 2-3 sweaters, 2-3 thermal base layer tops, 1 vest

  • Bottoms: Fleece-lined or thermal leggings, 1-2 pairs of jeans or pants

  • Shoes: Waterproof winter boots, comfortable sneakers

  • Accessories: A scarf, beanie, gloves, and 3-4 pairs of wool socks

  • Bags: Anti-theft crossbody bag or backpack, reusable tote bag

  • Extras: Hand warmers, camera and extra batteries, portable charger, cash

What to Wear to Christmas Markets (Clothes to Pack)

Layering is your very best friend when dressing for a day of exploring European Christmas markets. The weather can change in an instant, and you might find yourself moving between chilly outdoor stalls and warm indoor shops. Or if you're anything like me and have a hard time regulating body temperature in the winter (such a struggle!), then layering is truly a lifesaver.

Coats & Outerwear

A warm coat is the most important piece of your Christmas market outfit. You'll be wearing it all day long and in almost every photo, so pick one you love!

Warm Puffy Coat

A high-quality insulated puffer is essential, and bonus points if it's a longer thigh-length or knee-length coat with a hood. This REI down parka has a very high level of warmth, is water-resistant, windproof, and even has a cozy sherpa-lined hood. Another great option is this Patagonia down parka, which is a little bit longer.

Long Wool Coat

You could also opt for a classic wool coat, which is perfect for a more polished look. This 100% merino wool coat from Quince is both gorgeous and comfy. I would recommend still bringing a wind-proof and water-resistant coat as a backup option.

Pro Tip: If you want to bring two coats without sacrificing luggage space, wear your heavier wool coat on the plane. Then, throw a packable puffer coat in your luggage. I absolutely swear by my packable puffer from Halfdays; it squishes down to a tiny little blob and is incredibly warm.

Puffy Vest or Sherpa Vest

A vest is a great layering piece for days when it's not quite cold enough for a heavy coat. Or alternatively, for layering underneath your heavy coat when it's bitterly cold outside. This Patagonia down puffer vest is my go-to for any outfit, while this Upland High-Pile Sherpa Vest actually has heating zones built in! They're battery operated, and can be adjusted by your phone or smartwatch. How cool is that?

Rain Jacket

Sometimes you'll encounter rainy days instead of that lovely winter snow, so a good rain jacket is an absolute must-have. My favorite is the Outdoor Research Aspire 3L Jacket - it’s waterproof and windproof yet still breathable, making it perfect for stashing in your bag just in case! Opt for the longer trench version of the same jacket for a little more protection.

Mid-Layers

Even if you don't see what's under your coat for most of the day, these pieces are are key to trapping body heat. Planning on popping into a few cafes or indoor shops? Go with a cute sweater! Spending the whole day outside? Keep it simple with a long sleeve thermal top underneath your coat of choice.

Sweaters

Pack a cozy sweater or two...or three. Turtleneck or mock neck styles are ideal because they'll provide extra warmth around your neck. I wear this Quince merino wool mock neck sweater on repeat in the winter months. Or, go for even more coziness with Quince's 100% yak wool turtleneck sweater.

Thermal Long Sleeve Tops

Don't skip this! A thermal top worn under your clothes will make a huge difference in your comfort level. You can wear this long sleeve top on its own, or layer it underneath a sweater for even more warmth. Try a merino base layer like this Smartwool quarter-zip option, or this Lululemon crewneck (without a zipper) for a slightly more versatile layering piece.

Bottoms

Choose pants that are comfortable and easy to move in over everything else - especially if you're layering tights and pants together for ultimate warmth.

Thermal Leggings or Tights

These are a game-changer for staying warm. You can wear these NinePine winter fleece-lined leggings or Lululemon thermal leggings completely on their own on super cold days. Alternatively, a pair of microfleece-lined tights are perfect for layering under another pair of pants.

Pants & Jeans

A pair of your favorite jeans or comfortable pants will work well for any outfit! My favorite for layering over a pair of thermal tights is something with a little bit of stretch, like these Abercrombie 90s relaxed jeans or 90s cuffed hem jeans.

Shoes to Pack for Christmas Markets

You’ll likely be doing a ton of walking on cobblestone streets, so comfortable, grippy and waterproof shoes are an absolute must. Trust me, your feet will thank you later!

Boots

Your primary shoes should be a pair multi-purpose boots that you can walk for miles in. Think Blundstones (my all time favorite travel footwear) or faux fur-lined Doc Martens for more "city" stylish options. Or another sturdy, waterproof winter boot like this Sorel pair or LLBean pair. Your feet need to stay warm and dry, no matter what.

Sneakers

If the forecast looks unusually warm and dry, a pair of cute but casual sneakers (that are thick enough to be weather-resistant) like Adidas Sambas can be a great second option.

Wearable Accessories to Pack

Story time: For years, I absolutely refused to wear gloves, thinking they would get in the way of using my camera. And wow, did I pay for that in severely frozen fingers! This was also flawed thinking, since you can get almost any type of glove with an e-tip - lesson learned. Winter accessories are not just for style, they are truly essential.

Scarf or Neck Warmer

A large, warm scarf is versatile and can add a pop of color to your Christmas market outfits. I'm a sucker for tartan print during the holiday season, so this cozy Quince cashmere tartan scarf is a no-brainer! They also have a solid version (in various colors) that will pair with more outfit combinations.

Or, a neck warmer is a perfect lower-profile alternative. This Quince cashmere snood is an elevated version of your typical neck warmer, and comes in multiple color options.

Hat or Winter Headband

You lose a lot of heat through your head, so a warm hat is a must. Beanies are always an easy go-to option, like this super cozy merino wool Halfdays beanie. Or you can pack something slightly more playful like a sherpa bucket hat.

A fleece-lined headband is a great alternative if you want to keep your ears warm without messing up your hair. I'm a huge fan of this alpine headband from Skida, which comes in approximately a gazillion patterns and colors! (As well as classic black, to match anything).

Gloves or Mittens

...That ideally are tech-compatible! Keep your hands protected from the cold, especially while you're walking around town and snapping photos. These cashmere-lined leather gloves have an e-tip that allows easy phone and camera use. Or, these sherpa-lined REI down mittens are insanely warm (which I can personally vouch for!) although they do not feature an e-tip.

Warm Wool Socks

Honestly, this is the golden ticket to all-day warmth. Pack several pairs of thick merino wool socks, like this ultra-cozy Bombas pair, to keep your toes toasty inside your boots. I also love Darn Tough and Smartwool - you can't go wrong with any of these three brands.

Other Things to Pack

  • Anti-theft Bag: Crowded markets can be a target for pickpockets. A small crossbody bag or an anti-theft backpack will give you peace of mind.

  • Reusable Tote Bag: You’ll want a place to stash all the unique gifts and treats you buy, as well as any souvenir glühwein mugs you end up collecting! A packable tote bag or reusable shopping bag is perfect for this.

  • Hand Warmers: These little packets are lifesavers on cold days. Pop them in your pockets or gloves for an extra boost of warmth.

  • Camera and Extra Batteries: Cold weather can drain camera batteries very quickly. Bring at least one spare battery so you don’t miss capturing any of the magic. PS. This is my all-time favorite travel camera (so very worth the hype), and the spare batteries it uses.

  • Portable Charger: You never know when you might need to recharge your phone, especially if you’re using it to capture photos, check maps, and simply stay connected all day long in cold temperatures when tech batteries drain much faster. This power bank is compact, reliable, and gives you up to 2.5 full phone battery charges on-the-go.

  • Cash: While many vendors at Christmas markets accept card payments or tap to pay, there are still some that operate on a cash-only basis. Make sure to bring along some cash so you don't have to skip out on anything, or go searching for an ATM!

Christmas Market Outfit Inspiration

Need a little help putting it all together? Here are a few curated looks to inspire your packing list.

Classic & Cozy: Pair a long camel wool coat with a cream wool sweater, dark-wash cuffed hem jeans, and black Blundstone boots. Finish the look with a tartan scarf and a black beanie.

Casual & Sporty: Start with black fleece-lined leggings and a wool turtleneck. Layer a black down parka or puffy vest on top, and complete the outfit with faux fur-lined Doc Martens and a sherpa bucket hat.

Chic & Festive: Wear a black thermal top under a green wool turtleneck. Pair it with black jeans, Adidas Sambas, a tartan cashmere scarf, and maybe even some earmuffs if needed.

What to Expect: Winter Weather in Europe

Winter weather in Europe really varies by region. Central European cities like Prague, Vienna, and Budapest can be very cold, with temperatures often dropping below freezing and a good chance of snow. Always check the specific forecast for your destination right before you leave to make any last-minute adjustments to your packing list. If you discover that you desperately need something upon arrival, take that as a souvenir opportunity!

Quick Weather Notes

  • Mildest (relatively): Basel, Colmar, Copenhagen, Strasbourg

  • Classic chilly Christmas vibe: Budapest, Munich, Nuremberg, Prague, Vienna

  • Coldest / best chance of snow: Tallinn (often below freezing at night)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What kind of coat should I wear to a Christmas market?

A: A really warm coat is key. Something like this puffy down coat gives you that much-needed warmth, while a long wool coat is a classic yet stylish option for slightly milder weather. Bringing one of each is never a bad idea, if you have space!

Q: Can I wear jeans to a Christmas market?

A: Yes, you can definitely wear jeans. For extra insulation, you can layer a pair of thermal leggings or tights underneath, especially if temperatures are below freezing.

Q: What are the best shoes for walking around Christmas markets?

A: The best shoes are comfortable, waterproof winter boots with good traction. You'll be walking a lot on potentially snowy or icy cobblestone streets, so a mix of warmth and stability is the ultimate combination. My tried-and-true favorites will forever be these classic Blundstone boots!
